About us

Welcome to Swimming Club Torpedo. Since our founding in 1983, we have been a proud partner of the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation (KNZB), and we are based at the refreshing De Lieberg in Hilversum.

With a passionate group of about 100 members, including 57 enthusiastic competitive swimmers, we dive into the pool with full passion. Currently, we shine in the C-class of the Midwest Region, but we dream of higher waters and more exciting competitions. In our pursuit of greatness, we look forward to the coming years, where as one team—swimmers, parents, coaches, and the board—we aim to put our club’s name on the map!

Our club cannot exist without our volunteers.

At Torpedo, it's not just about the swimmers themselves; our parents are also indispensable heroes. From manning the jury to coordinating competitions and performing other important tasks, together we build a strong community. Will you join us? Sign up as a volunteer using the registration form!

Ons team

Chairman of the Board

Justus Vriesen

With a background in music and business administration, I work as Head of Production at Asko|Schönberg, a top-tier classical music ensemble in Amsterdam. There, I organize concerts, create budgets, manage planning, and lead a team of dedicated producers. It's a dynamic job full of innovation, adventure, and top-quality music.

As a reservist in the National Reserve at the Ministry of Defence, I enjoy working together to achieve goals. It keeps me fit and contributes to a safe and free society for everyone.

My passions are organizing, teamwork, taking initiative, and connecting people. I am sporty and believe in learning something new every day.

Through my daughter Fien, who has been passionate about swimming since her early childhood, I discovered ZV Torpedo. Here, all my core values come together. It is an international association of dedicated people with a strong team spirit. The club is for everyone who loves competitive swimming! I am proud of our club, our volunteers, and above all, our swimming talents.

Trainer

Inge van Bruinessen

Hi, I'm Inge.

I grew up in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, practically next to an outdoor swimming pool. As a child, I spent many (freezing) hours there, endlessly playing in the water with my brother and neighborhood kids. At the age of 12, I joined swimming club Scheldestroom. In the winters, I trained and competed in a 25-meter pool, while summers were filled with long-distance competitions.

My children have also caught the swimming bug. My son Sven swims with De Robben, and my daughter Liv is a member of Torpedo. It is wonderful to see how much fun they have in the water.

Trainer

Peter Maas

Peter grew up in Brabant where he was a member of the competitive swimming club in Veghel from a young age. During his teenage years, he transitioned from competitive swimming to lifesaving with the Boxtel Lifeguard Brigade.

When his son Sjoerd started at Torpedo in 2014, there was a shortage of trainers. Training turned out to be much more enjoyable than watching from the stands. It was also a good time to improve his own technique by swimming at personal swimming.

In recent years, Peter can often be found in both pools and open water, usually underwater with full diving gear. Recently, Peter completed the PADI Rescue Diver certification, focusing on improving technique.

Peter primarily works with advanced swimmers. For them, it's clear—a training session with Peter means lots of variety and little to no rest!

Saurabh Deshpande

I am Saurabh Deshpande.
Have been passionate about Swimming since childhood. It is such a great sport promoting physical development and overall fitness.

My daughter Reva too is in love with water. She started with Torpedo for competitive swimming and that’s how I got associated with this club. While watching Reva from the stand, I thought I can help very well with training.

It’s so much fun helping swimmers to learn/strengthen their techniques and feeling rejuvenated to watch them progressing day by day with their swimming skills and speed.

Trainer

Remko Veenstra

Hi swimmers,

I am Remko, father of Ella, Boaz, and Sanne. In the summer of 2022, after 8 years abroad, we returned to the Netherlands. While we miss the adventure abroad, it is wonderful to be back in the Lowlands, close to family and where everything is well-organized. Ella immediately started swimming. Knowing that a club relies on volunteers, I signed up as a trainer on Wednesdays. I always admire how all the swimmers glide smoothly and quickly through the water.

In daily life, I work for Stichting Kinderen Kankervrij (KiKa) in Amsterdam, where I spend the money that we at KiKa raise. Every day, I am moved between stories of despair and hope. It is great to see that we raise so much money in the Netherlands to fund research on childhood cancer.

Besides being at the pool, I also coach my son's football team weekly. To stay active myself, I enjoy running, mountain biking, and occasionally playing squash.

Secretary of the board

Pascal Veltman

Like most sports clubs in the Netherlands, ZV Torpedo is run entirely by volunteers. When my daughters, one after the other, joined Torpedo, I found it only logical to contribute to make sports at the club possible. Therefore, I have been the Secretary of the association for some time and for many members, prospective members, and parents, the first point of contact.

You will generally find me at the pool on Saturdays, welcoming new parents and handling club matters while enjoying the swimmers' performances from the stands. During competitions, I often help at the poolside to ensure everything runs smoothly. Being among our swimmers provides the most satisfaction for your efforts.

Competition Secretariat

Julia Nieuwhoff

In the midst of the corona pandemic, our eldest daughter Anne started competitive swimming. We were allowed to drop her off outside and pick her up later. During that time, there was a strong need for new volunteers, including at the competition secretariat. Thanks to enthusiastic swimmers and volunteers, I was drawn into competitive swimming without any prior experience.

Now, I have been part of the competition secretariat, which organizes the competitions, for several years. In a short time, I have learned a lot about competitive swimming and everything that comes with it. It's an incredibly fun way to be involved with Torpedo and to get to know the swimmers and their parents!

General boardmember

Johan Nieuwhoff

Hi, I am Johan

Father of Anne, our daughter who has been a member of ZV Torpedo since 2021. Since 2022, I have been contributing as a general board member. I enjoy this role because it allows me to help the association with various tasks. Due to my IT background, I assist the association with all IT-related issues and help ensure everything runs as smoothly as possible in this area.

I recommend every parent or guardian to volunteer and help make our club the best swimming club in the region.
